Reducing Bias in Evaluation and Benchmarking

Situational and observational evaluation help to eliminate or reduce bias, giving HR teams an ideal starting point to develop targeted learning plans.

Let’s set some ground rules… the best 360° evaluations have 4 parties: The subject, the peer, the line manager and the subordinate. The most accurate assessment of your true competence is the aggregate of these scores. If you can’t achieve all four, then a smaller sub-set is ok too, but the closer to four the better.

Second, the person evaluating needs to actually work regularly with the subject and to have observed them responding to the challenges and tasks of their job. Aim to choose people that have a year experience working with the subject. 

Lastly – get buy-in and senior support. Data gathering exercises need participation from all parties so get them on board and make it easy for them. ​
